Plastic or Metal
So, I am joining the ranks of pre-teens all over the country (and my friends Amanda and Adam) to get braces put on my teeth at the age of 25! Even though my insurance doesn't cover it, I can set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for them over time thru my job...(sigh of relief) Now, I have a choice to make: Traditional metal brackets for 1 1/2 to 2 years or Clear plasic-like brackets for a few months longer? I'm not sure, but I think I want to go with the more esthetically appealing choice. (at least for the top row). I guess Amanda is the only blog reader who can speak from experience, but what do you folks think?

dude. Seriously. You don't need braces. Go on a trip or something.
My dentist is always trying to get me to get braces (I'll be writing about this in my next blog) and I want to tell him, "Really Dr. Kim, you and I both know I don't need braces..." if you want to see the rest, you'll have to visit my blog...
David, as one who has been through the adult orthodontia experience, I think that it is well worth it. A long as they don't try to crack your jaw and put metal plates and screws in your face, the most annoying part will be trying to gracefully pick food out of your teeth in public. But since we don't live in Thailand, that shouldn't be that big of a deal. :)
I would also recommend getting clear on the top. And don't listen to what they tell you about not drinking coffee and tea ... I did it for the entire 2 years and 3 months that I wore them, and nobody every told me that my teeth looked disgusting. But if you choose to forego the clear, there are metal brackets that are smaller than normal, so be sure to ask if that would be an option.
Wearing braces makes happy faces, David. Go for it.
Which will it be folks? Will he get braces, or will he not?
Tune in next time for the results!
Gene, I agree there is much more important than the vanity of having straight and white teeth, but I'm going through with it mainly because I should have had them at the age of 12 and my parents couldn't afford them. But I appreciate your thoughts...and yes, thanks to a great payment plan, I will be taking a trip as well...
Well, "Shucks" (as my dad and many other southern's would once say). Where are you going? Maybe you can blog it...
PS ... I didn't pay for my own braces, so take that into account with my overly-excited "yes." I also had them to correct TMJ, so it wasn't just so I could have straight teeth. Although I do like having straight teeth ...
hey david, i'm in LA at the moment and i thought i'd write you and say hi while i was in california with you.
i'm lovin' it! maybe one day i'll get a job where i'll "have" to move here.
David, go for it man, you'll be glad later... those metal plates they use sometimes to spread your palate suck though, hopefully you wont have one
I think this has been your most controversial blog ever, David:-)
I think you're right Gene. but, I wasn't asking whether I should get them or not. Just whether I should get metal or clear brackets..haha.
To jeff: I technically need that palet expander, but I can live with a cross-bite one side. its the major crowding in my front teeth that i'm most concerned about.
You know I had a retainer once that I was wearing on my two front teeth. Then one day I decided I hated it and didn't want to wear it anymore, so I didn't. I don't think it helped anyway.
just be sure to wear that thing called a retainer they give you a couple years from now. At some point I decided I no longer needed this, and I am experiencing the same thing as you now. Yes, braces aren't just for straight teeth, but also for little problems like a bite that grinds away your back teeth. nice. But b/c I have already been down the orthodontic road I am refusing to do it again. So, it's not just people who get braces that are "vain", but also we who chose not too. :) oh, and we miss you!
